In a landmark infrastructure push aimed at accelerating regional development and strengthening western Odisha’s connectivity network, Odisha Works Minister Shri Prithiviraj Harichandan has announced the upgradation of the strategically important Bhawanipatna–Khariar road into a modern four-lane corridor, fulfilling a long-standing aspiration of the people of Kalahandi and Nuapada districs.
The ambitious project, spanning nearly 70 kilometres, is being seen as a major step in the state government’s larger vision of transforming Odisha’s road infrastructure under the proactive leadership of the current administration.
Speaking on the initiative, Minister Prithiviraj Harichandan emphasized that the project will not only strengthen inter-district connectivity but also unlock new opportunities for economic growth, trade expansion, and rural mobility across western Odisha.
“This project is not merely a road expansion initiative; it is a transformational connectivity corridor for the people of Kalahandi and Nuapada. The government is committed to ensuring world-class infrastructure reaches every region of Odisha,” the Minister stated.
Massive Investment to Drive Regional Growth
The Odisha Government has earmarked approximately ₹640 crore for the construction of the four-lane road corridor, while an additional ₹91 crore will be invested towards bridge infrastructure and allied developmental works.
As part of the project:
- Five major bridges and 15 minor bridges will be constructed.
- The existing bridge over the Tel River will also undergo extensive repair and renovation works.
The upgraded corridor is expected to dramatically improve transportation efficiency, reduce congestion, and create a safer and faster travel experience for commuters.
Big Relief for Farmers, Traders & Transport Sector
Minister Harichandan highlighted that the improved connectivity will directly benefit:

- Transport operators

The enhanced corridor will facilitate faster transportation of:
- Paddy

to nearby mandis and commercial centers, thereby significantly boosting local trade and economic activity.

The Minister further noted that the four-laning project will substantially reduce:

while ensuring smoother movement of:
- Passenger vehicles
- Buses

The project is also expected to improve emergency response accessibility and strengthen regional integration between remote areas and key urban centres.
