The Odisha government mounted a rapid and coordinated response as heavy rainfall triggered by a deep depression over the Bay of Bengal affected several parts of the state.
More than 10,000 people were evacuated from vulnerable areas, while ministers were sent to the affected districts to supervise relief operations and strengthen coordination with local administrations.
The large-scale evacuation reflected the government’s focus on preventing casualties and protecting residents before weather conditions deteriorated further.
Ministers Rush to Affected Districts
The government deployed ministers to vulnerable districts to assess conditions on the ground and monitor evacuation, relief and emergency-response measures.
Their presence was intended to ensure faster decisions, direct coordination with district officials and the timely delivery of assistance to affected communities.
Administrative teams were placed on alert and instructed to remain prepared for flooding, waterlogging, road disruptions and other rain-related emergencies.
Precautionary Evacuations Save Lives
Residents of low-lying and high-risk areas were moved to safer locations as a preventive measure.
By shifting more than 10,000 people before the weather system intensified, the government sought to minimise the risk to life and ensure that vulnerable families remained protected.
Officials continued to monitor conditions in affected areas and maintain communication with field teams.
IMD Warns of Heavy Rain and Strong Winds
The India Meteorological Department forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall in several parts of Odisha on September 23 and 24 due to the deep depression over the Bay of Bengal.
The IMD also warned that squally weather would prevail along the Odisha coast, with wind speeds gusting up to 70 kmph.
Fishermen were advised not to venture into the sea until the morning of September 25.
The advisory was circulated to coastal communities as the state administration strengthened preparedness along vulnerable stretches.
Relief Machinery Kept Ready
The government directed officials to maintain operational readiness and ensure the availability of essential supplies for evacuated residents.
Emergency teams were instructed to respond quickly to local requirements and take necessary measures to maintain access to food, drinking water, medicines and shelter.
Departments were also asked to remain prepared for possible disruptions to roads, electricity and communication services.
Proactive Disaster Management
Odisha’s response combined early evacuation, ministerial supervision and coordination between state and district authorities.
The movement of more than 10,000 residents to safety demonstrated the government’s emphasis on preparedness and preventive action rather than waiting for emergencies to escalate.
As the deep depression continued to influence weather conditions, the administration urged people to remain alert, follow official instructions and cooperate with rescue and evacuation personnel.
The government’s swift mobilisation reinforced Odisha’s focus on protecting lives through timely warnings, coordinated field operations and strong disaster preparedness.
