Naveen Patnaik, the chief minister of Odisha, congratulated C A Bhavani Devi on representing India and winning gold in the Senior Women’s Individual Sabre event at the Commonwealth Fencing Championship in London.
Bhavani Devi, who previously won the championship, won the gold medal in the current Commonwealth Fencing Championship in London.
In the senior women’s sabre individual category final, the Indian fencer, who was rated 42nd overall, overcame the second-seeded Australian, Veronika Vasileva, 15-10.
The Chennai-born fencer Bhavani has steadily improved since being the first Indian to qualify for the Olympics.
