The National Institute of Ocean Technology and the government of Odisha have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to protect the state’s coastline.

In order to preserve its coasts, the government of Odisha and the National Institute of Ocean Technology have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). Dr. G A Ramdass, Director of NIOT, Chennai, and B K Mishra, Chief Engineer of the Water Resources Department, signed the Memorandum of Understanding on Wednesday.

Water Resources Minister Tukuni Sahu, who was there, stated, “The state administration is taking all possible measures for disaster mitigation and focusing on zero casualties.” A top institution in the nation with a focus on ocean engineering and shoreline protection is the National Institute of Ocean Technology, which is part of the Ministry of Earth Sciences.

The institute will offer technical support, design, and drawing of climate resilient coastal protection measures, according to Department of Water Resources Secretary Anu Garg’s description of the MoU’s specifics. The Secretary stated that the residents of the state’s six coastal districts, including Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, and Ganjam, will profit from this, and that it will mark a significant turning point in disaster risk reduction (DRR) in the state.

With a 480 km long coastline, Odisha has a sizable coastline that is vulnerable to natural calamities. High tidal surges and extremely high winds caused by cyclones inflict property damage and human casualties. The secretary reported that such coastal erosion has been seen recently in various locations. “As a permanent and lasting solution, the state administration has planned to implement climate-resilient coastline protection measures, building and strengthening saline embankments utilising the newest technology available in the nation,” Mr. Garg added.
