Indian sprinter Dutee Chand’s fight against hyperandrogenism (excess of male hormones) to compete at the Olympics has attracted Rakesh Omprakash Mehra, who brought the story of legendary runner Milkha Singh on silver screen.
In fact, Mehra approached Dutee and her coach N Ramesh through Rupinder Singh, a renowned athletics commentator before the Olympics.
“At that time, we were too focused on the Olympics, so obviously we couldn’t divert our attention on anything else,” Ramesh told India Today.
The Sports Authority of India (SAI) had conducted tests on Dutee on a request from the Athletics Federation of India in June, 2014. The tests revealed high androgen (male hormone) levels, but later, the SAI decided to challenge the IAAF regulation before the CAS.
In July 2015, Dutee won a landmark decision when the CAS upheld Dutee’s appeal against the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) rule, which had declared her ineligible to compete as a female under its hyperandrogenism clause.
Since 2015, Dutee has been training in Hyderabad at the Gachibowli Stadium, close to where Pullela Gopichand trains many of India’s top shuttlers, including PV Sindhu.
The movie makers are now in touch with a Bangalore-based sports management company who are negotiating the terms on behalf of Dutee. It is at Gopichand’s advise that sports management company came into the picture.
Recently, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was emailed by the movie makers, which is yet to be signed but sources close to Dutee have confirmed that they are very much interested in showcasing the Olympian’s life on the big screen.
“We are too naive and there are too many technicalities involved in such cases. We are training here day in and day out and don’t want to get into all this. Dutee has been an inspiration to many and obviously, people should know about her and her fight,” Ramesh added.
It has also been learnt that a biopic on Sindhu is also being planned. A popular production house has already been in touch with Gopichand and Sindhu for the movie.
