The top court was hearing a petition filed by a non-profit that complained there were 60 children in detention centres because their citizenship was yet to be established.
Parents who have been included in Assam’s register of citizens but their children have not will not be separated for now, the Centre’s top law officer KC Venugopal promised the Supreme Court on Monday.
The top court was hearing a request filed by a non-profit that complained there were 60 children in detention centres because their citizenship was yet to be established. In these 60 cases, the application said, one or both parents had made it to the citizens’ register but the children were detained because they could not clear the citizenship test.
“I cannot conceive children being sent to detention centres. Where parents have been given citizenship through National Register of Citizens, the children will not be sent to detention centres for now,” Attorney General KK Venugopal told the Supreme Court.
A bench led by Chief Justice of India SA Bobde told the government to file an affidavit in four weeks.
‘Couldn’t provide security’: Warden of JNU hostel resigns over campus violence
The administration has condemned the violence but said it was the students agitating against hostel fee hike who engaged in violence.
INDIA Updated: Jan 06, 2020 12:16 IST
Senior warden of one of the hostels of the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) resigned on Monday, a day after violence at the campus in which more than 20 students were injured.
R Meena, the warden of Sabarmati hostel, said in his resignation letter “we tried but couldn’t provide security to hostel”.
Sabarmati, Mahi Mandvi and Periyar hostels were attacked by masked persons on Sunday evening. The mob of masked persons entered the hostel and students and and professors with sticks and rods during a meeting by JNU Teachers’ Association on the issue of violence on campus.
Video footage aired by some TV channels showed a group of men, who were brandishing hockey sticks and rods, moving around a building.
The day after, there is uneasy calm in the university and a tight security ring thrown around by the police to prevent any untoward activity. JNU Vice-Chancellor M Jagadesh Kumar has appealed to the students of JNU to maintain peace.
“Would like to appeal to all the JNU students to maintain peace. The University stands by all the students to facilitate their pursuit of academic activities. We will ensure that their winter semester registration will take place without any hindrance,” he said on Twitter.

The administration has condemned the violence but said it was the students agitating against hostel fee hike who engaged in violence.
The Left-backed JNU students’ union (JNUSU) and many students alleged that members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the student wing of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, attacked them.
The ABVP has refuted the charges, saying members of the Left parties led the violence.
India vs Sri Lanka: Pressure mounts on Dhawan as battle with Rahul for opener’s slot heats up
IND vs SL: In the year that went by, Shikhar Dhawan managed 272 runs in 12 games at a strike rate of 110. KL Rahul, on the other hand, has made the most of his opportunities at the top.
CRICKET Updated: Jan 06, 2020 12:03 IST
A washed out series-opener means Shikhar Dhawan has one game less to make a statement in his quest to outperform an in-form K L Rahul, making the opener’s fortunes an interesting sub-plot of India’s second T20 International against Sri Lanka here on Tuesday. Dhawan, 35, is a proven performer in limited overs cricket but with age on Rahul’s side (27), time is running out for the easy-going Delhi-based cricketer to cement his place for the T20 World Cup later this year. The left-hander’s strike rate in the shortest format has been an issue for a while and that is one thing he must address in the remaining two matches against Sri Lanka.

The fact that Dhawan is coming back from an injury, one of the many he suffered in 2019, makes his task all the more challenging. In the year that went by, Dhawan managed 272 runs in 12 games at a strike rate of 110. Rahul, on the other hand, has made the most of his opportunities at the top and was in scintillating form in the previous limited overs series (three ODIs and three T20s) against the West Indies, scoring a hundred and three fifties in six innings.
Former India opener and chief selector Krishnamachari Srikanth has gone to the extent of saying that there is no competition between Dhawan and Rahul as the latter is way ahead in the race to be Rohit Sharma’s partner in the T20 World Cup in Australia.
Skipper Virat Kohli too has stated that choosing between Dhawan and Rahul will be a tough call after Rohit, who is rested from the Sri Lanka series, returns to opening the innings.
“When Rohit comes back, you know, it’s going to be a difficult thing to address because Shikhar has been an experienced player but KL is playing so well. I think we’ll have to decide what is the best combination that we can go with and who are the best XI to take the field,” Kohli had said ahead of the first T20.
Considering not a ball was bowled in Guwahati, it is unlikely that Kohli will make changes to the playing XI, having picked three specialist pacers and two spinners for the series-opener. Washington Sundar and Kuldeep Yadav were the chosen spinners with Yuzvendra Chahal and Ravindra Jadeja missing out. Kohli had taken that call keeping the significant presence of left-handers in the Sri Lankan line-up.
Manish Pandey and Sanju Samson, who has been warming the bench series after series, are likely to sit out again.
India are being experimental ahead of the World Cup in October-November but the management has so far not given an opportunity to Pandey and Samson.
Star pacer Jasprit Bumrah’s comeback after four months was highly anticipated in Guwahati but rain and subsequent wet outfield played spoilsport. He is certain to get game time on Tuesday with clear weather predicted in Indore. The Holkar Stadium has hosted only one T20 International so far and the visiting team happened to be Sri Lanka.

It was a high-scoring game in December 2017 with Rohit smashing 118 off 43 balls and Rahul fetching 89 off 49 as India went on to make 260 for five in 20 overs. The hosts eventually won the game by 88 runs.
All-rounder Angelo Mathews, one of Sri Lanka’s most experienced players alongside skipper Lasith Malinga, did not find a place in the playing XI in Guwahati with the visitors also going for three specialist pacers and two spinners. It remains to be seen if Mathews makes the team on Tuesday.
Sri Lanka, who have not won a bilateral series against India across formats for more than 10 years now, will have to produce a special performance to upstage the domineering hosts here.

Vijay Mallya’s petition in India won’t stop UK insolvency proceedings: Supreme Court
Mallya had approached the apex court on June 27 seeking a stay on the confiscation of properties owned by him and his relatives.
INDIA Updated: Jan 06, 2020 11:41 IST
The Supreme Court on Monday clarified that businessman Vijay Mallya, who faces charges of financial irregularities amounting to over Rs 9,000 crore, cannot use pendency of his plea regarding repayment plan in Supreme Court to stall proceedings in other jurisdiction.
A bench headed by Chief Justice S A Bobde passed the order after the Centre told the top court that Mallya used pendency of his plea to stall the UK court from delivering verdict in insolvency proceedings.
Mallya had approached the apex court on June 27 seeking a stay on the confiscation of properties owned by him and his relatives.
A consortium of 13 banks, led by SBI, have filed a bankruptcy petition before a UK court seeking an order against liquor Mallya over the alleged unpaid debt of around Rs 9,000 crore. Besides SBI, the 13 Indian banks include Bank of Baroda, Corporation bank, Federal Bank Ltd, IDBI Bank, Indian Overseas Bank, Jammu & Kashmir Bank, Punjab & Sind Bank, Punjab National Bank, State Bank of Mysore, UCO Bank, United Bank of India and JM Financial Asset Reconstruction Co. Pvt Ltd.
In July, the banks had won a High Court battle to access documents they were after to establish the true ownership of assets they believed were linked with the embattled liquor tycoon.
Two superyachts, a game reserve in South Africa, numerous undeclared high-value and vintage cars, valuable paintings and a piano previously owned by famous British singer-songwriter Elton John were among some of the assets on their target list.
Mallya’s legal team has argued that the petition for bankruptcy in the UK should be dismissed because the banks are pursuing the same debt through the Indian courts.
Mallya, who founded the now-defunct Kingfisher airlines, fled to Britain in March 2016 after facing accusations of financial irregularities amounting to over Rs 9,000 crore. Mallya has consistently claimed that the charges he faces are baseless and fabricated and the Centre refused to take him up on his offer to clear his loans.
JNU V-C calls for peace, says protecting academic interests ‘top priority’
The JNU vice-chancellor M Jagadesh Kumar’s statement came after a masked mob, armed with sticks and rods, barged into the JNU campus on Sunday evening and attacked students and teachers leaving 23 injured.

A day after the violence at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), its vice-chancellor M Jagadesh Kumar appealed to students to maintain peace and assured them of protecting their “academic interests”.
“The University stands by all the students to facilitate their pursuit of academic activities. We will ensure that their winter semester registration will take place without any hindrance,” Jagadesh Kumar said in a statement.
“They need not fear about their process. The top priority of the University is to protect the academic interests of our students,” he said.

“They prevented thousands of students from doing their winter registration. Their intent is clearly aimed at disrupting the functioning of the University. This is simply hooliganism and against the ethos of JNU. No such person will be spared and appropriate action will be taken,” he said.
The JNU vice-chancellor’s statement came after a masked mob, armed with sticks and rods, barged into the JNU campus on Sunday evening and attacked students and teachers leaving 23 injured.
Videos and television visuals showed the mob in jeans and shirts, with strips of cloth covering their faces, vandalise hostels, hurl stones and hit students with sticks on the campus.
JNUSU on Monday called for the removal of Jagadesh Kumar accusing him of “perpetuating” violence after attack by a masked mob on the campus on Sunday evening.
It said, “goons from outside, especially Delhi University” were “imported” to break the momentum of the hostel fee hike protest, which has been going on for over two months.
“Mr. Mamidala Jagadesh Kumar, it is time to go! The JNU community has a single point demand. That either this VC resign or the MHRD as the competent authority remove him! Those who are trying to malign and destroy this university will not succeed JNU will live on!” JNUSU said in a statement.
“M Jagadesh Kumar is behaving like a mobster who perpetuates violence in the university he is supposed to administer,” it said.
