In a significant move to bolster Odisha’s technological and infrastructural development, Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, during discussions with Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on the sidelines of the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas, revealed plans for establishing a world-class IT training institute in the state. Chief Minister Majhi assured full support, including land and essential facilities, for the proposed institute.

Paving the Way for a Technological Revolution

The two leaders engaged in discussions about Odisha’s IT sector, including a proposal for setting up a semiconductor industry in the state. Chief Minister Majhi sought the Union Minister’s assistance in attracting leading IT companies to Odisha. Responding positively, Vaishnaw committed to extending all necessary support, promising to transform Odisha into a mega IT hub.

Highlighting the state’s ongoing initiatives, Vaishnaw mentioned the implementation of the Chip to Startup program in four premier institutions in Odisha—IIT Bhubaneswar, NIT Rourkela, IIIT Bhubaneswar, and Parala Maharaja Engineering College, Berhampur. This program aims to promote IT startups and foster innovation in the state.

Unprecedented Railway Development in Odisha

Odisha’s railway network also took center stage during the discussions. Vaishnaw shared updates on the 48 railway projects currently underway in the state, with an investment of ₹73,723 crore. The Union Cabinet recently approved eight new projects, including:

  • Gunupur-Therubali
  • Junagarh-Nabarangpur
  • Malkangiri-Pandurangapuram (via Bhadrachalam)
  • Badampahar-Kendujhargarh
  • Bangiriposi-Gorumahisani
  • Buramara-Chakulia
  • Saradega-Bhalumunda (new double line)
  • Bargarh Road-Nuapada Road

Vaishnaw emphasized that the railway projects from 2014 to 2024 have already surpassed Sri Lanka’s entire railway network, with 1,827 km of new lines constructed in Odisha. Additionally, 427 railway under-bridges have been completed, six Vande Bharat trains are currently operating in the state, and 59 stations are set to be upgraded under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme.

Strengthening Ties with the Center

The Chief Minister and Union Minister also discussed ways to enable more Odias to participate in the Maha Kumbh Mela. Vaishnaw assured Majhi that the Center would continue to prioritize Odisha’s development and expand its connectivity through rail and IT infrastructure in the coming years.

A Future-Ready Odisha

This collaboration between the state and central governments signifies a shared commitment to turning Odisha into a powerhouse of IT and infrastructure. With world-class facilities, robust railway connectivity, and a focus on fostering innovation, Odisha is on track to becoming a hub of economic and technological growth.

As Odisha gears up for these transformative projects, the leadership of Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi and the Union Government’s proactive support mark a new chapter in the state’s journey towards progress and prosperity.
