She held the position of Honorable Governor of Jharkhand from 2015 to 2021. She served as the state’s first female governor as well as the first female tribal chieftain to hold the position of governor in an Indian state.

The Republic of India’s fifteenth president, Draupadi Murmu, was sworn in today. Murmu took the oath of office for the highest position in the government in the Central Hall of Parliament in New Delhi. She is now India’s second woman and first tribal president. Draupadi Murmu paid respects to Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat in Delhi prior to the swearing-in ceremony.

The President was sworn in at 10:15 a.m. by Chief Justice of India N. V. Ramana, who then switched places with outgoing President Ram Nath Kovind. Murmu put her signature on the oath register that the President’s secretary handed her. The home secretary announced the appointment of the new president after receiving the new President’s approval.

President Kovind, who is leaving office, and President-elect Murmu arrived at Parliament House at 10:03. CJI Ramana, Speaker of the Lok Sabha Om Birla, and departing Vice President and Chairman of the Rajya Sabha M Venkaiah Naidu welcomed them there. The event was also attended by high government civil and military officials, members of parliament, members of the Council of Ministers, governors of several states, chief ministers, and heads of foreign missions.

The election for the next president of India was held on July 21, and NDA candidate Draupadi Murmu easily defeated opposition candidate Yashwant Sinha. Compared to Sinha, who received just 1,877 first preference votes worth 3,80,177, she received 2824 first preference votes worth 6,76,803 votes.

Draupadi Murmu has been involved in politics for more than 20 years. She was born on June 20, 1958, in the village of Uparbeda, district Mayurbhanj in Odisha, to a Santal Tribal family.

She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from Ramadevi Women’s College in Bhubaneswar and subsequently worked for the Odisha government from 1979 to 1983 as a Junior Assistant in the Irrigation and Power Department. She began working as a teacher at the Sri Aurobindo Integral Education Centre in Rairangpur in 1994 and remained there till 1997. She had three children after getting married to Shyam Charan Murmu. She lost her spouse and two boys. Itishri Murmu, her married daughter, lives in Bhubaneshwar and works at UCO Bank.

She was chosen to serve on the Rairangpur NAC’s vice-chairman in 1997 after being elected as a councillor. She was elected to the same constituency as an MLA. Murmu was on the national executive of the BJP’s ST Morcha from 2002 until 2009. From 2006 to 2009, she held the position of state president for the same. She worked as a national executive member of ST Morcha from 2013 to April 2015.

She held the position of Honorable Governor of Jharkhand from 2015 to 2021. She served as the state’s first female governor as well as the first female tribal chieftain to hold the position of governor in an Indian state.
