To ensure the best possible use of the land in metropolitan centres and on their peripheries during future growth, the state government of Odisha has started the process for creating comprehensive development plans (CDP) for 62 towns around the state.

Despite the fact that an expert agency has already been sought to prepare CDPs for the designated towns, work on this project is anticipated to begin in the first quarter of the fiscal year 2023–2024, according to sources in the Housing and Urban Development (H&UD) department.

A total of 62 towns, including Rairangpur, Karanjia, Udala, Soro, Jaleswar, Nilagiri, Dhamnagar, Athagarh, Banki, Bhuban, Nimapara, Digapahandi, Bhanjanagar, Chikiti, and Hindol, will have master plans produced as part of the project, which will be undertaken in ten packages.

The CDP development project also covers a number of locations in the tribal belt, such as Kotpad, Malkangiri, Balimela, Nabarangpur, Umerkote, and Junagarh. The CDP for these towns will cover local issues and solutions, urban infrastructure, transit plans, investment plans, and other issues.

The land use pattern and plan, housing plan, traffic and transportation plan, short- and long-term strategies to take up road widening and development projects in phases, parking facilities in key locations, the requirement of flyovers and by-passes, if any, drainage plan, environment management plan, solid waste management plan, plans for the development of social infrastructure, utility services, disaster management, and more will all be covered. The GIS base map created by the Odisha Space Applications Center will be used to help prepare the CDP.
