Coke Studio @MTV has achieved a cult status in the musiccanvas of India. Varied collaborations from the artists across the country has brought superb range of music and delight to the people passionate about the craft.

In it’s 4th season, the tradition continues with singer Sona Mohapatra and musician Ram Sampath and their creation ‘Rangabti’.

According to the description of video, ‘Rangabati’ is one of the most popular folk songs from the Sambalpur region of Odisha. Music director Ram Sampath and singer Sona Mohapatra (remember Mujhe Kya Bechega Rupaiya from Satyameva Jayate?) came together to re-interpret the song.

Sampath chose to make it a bilingual conversation of Sambalpuri and Tamil. ‘Rangabati’ is mixed with ‘Bande Utkal Janini’, another Tamil folk song that talks about one’s roots and mother. While Sona and chorus took care of Sambalpuri part of the song, Rituraj Mohanty and rapper duo Tony and Rajesh from Dharavi, Mumbai introduced the Tamil part.

‘Rangabati’ was recorded for the first time in the mid 70’s by Jitendra Haripal and Krishna Patel with music by Prabhudatta Pradhan.

The new version of ‘Rangabati’ marks 10 years of Sona Mohapatra as a music artist. What could be better than paying tribute to your home state to celebrate the occasion?
