The move is to ensure safety and security of girl students belonging to backward communities staying in the hostels across the state.
Speaking to the media about the initiative, ST/SC Development, Minorities and Backward Classes Welfare Minister Ramesh Majhi said 1000 hostels will come under the CCTV surveillance in the first phase.
According to the minister, the Odisha State Police Housing and Welfare Corporation Ltd will be entrusted with the installation of CCTV cameras. The tender will be floated for the procurement of the CCTV cameras soon.
Notably, there are 7000 ST/SC hostels in the state which accommodate around 5 lakh students.
