New Delhi,25 Jan. 2019: The Supreme Court on Friday sought the Centre’s response on a plea challenging the constitutional validity of 10 per cent reservation to economically weaker sections (EWS) of general category.
A bench of Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justice Sanjiv Khanna said they will examine the issue and asked the Centre to reply within four weeks.
The petition filed by NGO Youth for Equality sought the quashing of the amendment on the grounds that economic criterion cannot be the sole basis for reservation.
The petitioner said it violates the basic feature of the Constitution as a reservation on economic grounds cannot be limited to the general categories and the 50 per cent ceiling limit cannot be breached
