Veteran singer Nirmala Mishra, who sang in Bengali and Odia, died early on Sunday after having a severe heart attack.
Mishra, 81, who received the Balakrushna Das Award, had long struggled with aging-related illnesses.
The musician was pronounced dead at the local nursing home after suffering a huge heart attack around 12:05 in the morning, the doctor told PTI.
Mishra, who was born in 1938 in West Bengal’s South 24 Parganas area, received the Sangeet Sudhakar Balakrushna Das Award for her lifelong contributions to Odia music.
She has several Bengali melodies, such as “Eamon Ekta Jhinuk,” “Bolo to Arshi,” and “Eai Banglar Mati Te.”
“Mo Mana Beena Ra Taare” and “Nida Bhara Raati Madhu Jhara Janha” are two of the audience’s favourite Odia songs.
Mamata Banerjee, the chief minister of West Bengal, has expressed her sorrow on the passing of the seasoned vocalist.
Sources claim that around 11 am, the singer’s remains would be brought to Rabindra Sadan so that her admirers and fans can pay their respects.
