In a proud and historic moment for India — and particularly for Odisha — President Droupadi Murmu has become the first Head of the Country in the world to have flown in both the Sukhoi Su-30 MKI and Rafale fighter aircraft, marking a milestone in global military aviation and women’s leadership.

On Wednesday, President Murmu undertook a sortie in the Rafale fighter jet at Air Force Station Ambala, Haryana, making her the first woman President worldwide to achieve this rare distinction. The event was organised under the Indian Air Force’s outreach programme to showcase operational preparedness and strengthen civil–military ties.

This follows her earlier sortie in a Sukhoi Su-30 MKI at Tezpur Air Force Station, Assam, on April 8, 2023, where she became the first Indian President to fly in a combat aircraft.

A Global Milestone in Aviation and Leadership

By piloting both fighter aircraft, President Murmu has accomplished a feat unmatched by any other world leader. India and Indonesia are among the few countries operating both Su-30s and Rafales — yet, there is no recorded instance of any Head of State undertaking flights in both.

While the Su-30 MKI is of Russian origin and the Rafale is built in France, both aircraft form the backbone of India’s aerial combat capability. Notably, both types were instrumental in Operation Sindoor, where they showcased India’s tactical precision and strategic deterrence.

Odisha’s Daughter, India’s Pride

President Murmu, who hails from Mayurbhanj in Odisha, continues to bring immense pride to her home state. Her achievements resonate deeply among the people of Odisha, symbolising the rise of leadership from India’s tribal heartlands to the nation’s highest constitutional office.

Her participation in two of the world’s most advanced fighter aircraft stands as a testament to her courage, discipline, and the evolving role of women in leadership and defence.

During her visit, the President interacted with Air Force officers and commended their unwavering service and excellence. “The valour and professionalism of our Air Warriors continue to inspire the nation. India’s skies are secure in their capable hands,” she said.

Empowerment Through Inspiration

President Murmu’s dual sorties are more than symbolic — they embody empowerment, inclusivity, and confidence in India’s defence forces. As the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, she exemplifies leadership grounded in humility and strength reminding the world that India’s unity and progress soar higher than ever before.

In Reflection:

President Droupadi Murmu’s achievement will go down in global aviation history as a defining moment  where a daughter of Odisha, leading as the President of India, took to the skies in the world’s most sophisticated fighter jets, reaffirming India’s spirit of courage, innovation, and pride.
