The FIFA Under-17 Women’s World Cup for football will be held in Odisha as yet another milestone in the state’s booming sports scene, which is being driven by the inspirational leadership of Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik.
Three India pool matches will be held in the Kalinga Stadium, the Center of Excellence in Sports, on October 11, October 14, and October 17. On October 11, India would play the United States; on October 14, it would play Morocco; and on October 17, it would play Brazil.
To that end, a high-level planning meeting was held today in the conference room of Lokseba Bhawan, presided over by Chief Secretary Suresh Chandra Mahapatra, where Secretary of Sports and Youth Services R. Vineel Krishna presented the suggested road map for infrastructure development and match organisation.
Chief Secretary Mahapatra reviewed the preparations that had been done so far and instructed the relevant departments to finish the allocated preliminary work by the end of September. In the meeting, the development of the projects involving the infrastructure upgrade of Kalinga Stadium, the upgrade of training facilities, additional parking spaces, pitch maintenance, additional power in training sites, promotional activities like the 38-day school programme and city activation, city barding, hospitality for guests, players, and dignitaries, and the organisation of a football carnival involving roughly 60,000 school students, among other things, were reviewed.
Roma Khanna, a FIFA official, expressed her tremendous happiness with the advancement. “Odisha is home to hockey, and now the State is becoming home to football,” she remarked. She also praised the development of Odisha’s sports eco-system.
