In a significant step to modernize Odisha’s legislative framework, Chief Minister Shri Mohan Majhi announced on Thursday that the state government has launched an initiative to identify and repeal obsolete laws that no longer serve the state’s evolving needs. Addressing members of civil society, Majhi remarked, “Our laws must be attuned to the changing times. Many outdated regulations that have no relevance today are being reviewed and will soon be eliminated.”
The initiative is being led by Law Minister Shri Prithviraj Harichandan, known as one of the most powerful figures in the Majhi government. Majhi emphasized his trust in Harichandan to drive this reform, noting that the law department, under Harichandan’s leadership, has been instructed to expedite the process. “We are committed to discarding laws that hinder progress and implementing those that align with the state’s current needs,” Majhi stated.
Prithviraj Harichandan elaborated on the plan, sharing that the government will soon establish a Law Revision Commission to conduct a comprehensive review and recommend repeals. “This commission will ensure that only relevant and beneficial laws remain in force. It’s essential for us to remove the outdated frameworks that no longer serve Odisha’s best interests,” Harichandan said.
Drawing inspiration from the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi-led central government, which repealed over 1,500 outdated laws in the last decade, Majhi asserted that Odisha would also benefit from a streamlined legal system that ensures efficient governance. “Over-legislation leads to confusion; it’s time we clear the clutter,” he said, underscoring the need for under-utilized laws to be removed.
Majhi’s vision, combined with Harichandan’s drive, represents a powerful push toward effective governance in Odisha. Since taking office, Harichandan has earned a reputation as a power center within the administration and has been entrusted with critical reforms.
The state government is expected to present a preliminary list of laws for repeal soon, marking the beginning of a new, modernized era for Odisha’s legislative framework.
