According to reports, the accused falsely identified herself as an Odia woman from Balasore who was enrolled in a medical programme in California.
A woman who the IT engineer met on an Odia matrimonial website is accused of defrauding him of Rs 24 lakh.
The victim, who is from the Khurda neighbourhood of Jatani, reported the incident to the cyber police in Bhubaneswar.
The woman allegedly falsely identified herself as an Odia girl from Balasore who was enrolled in a medical programme in California, according to the lawsuit.
The accused, who went by the name Priya Gupta, claimed she was apprehended at the Delhi airport for carrying 70,000 British Pounds (about Rs. 6,710,197.31).
She deceived the young man and forced him to pay Rs. 24 lakh in multiple instalments so that the UK currency could be released.
“I cannot share more details. They (the fraudsters) communicated with my family for more than six months. Just a few days after I learned of the deception, it occurred. They claimed to be from Bhubaneswar and gave a false name. We also spoke on the phone with other individuals she identified as her family. The phone numbers are being tracked by the police. The girl allegedly stated that she is currently a doctor in California “the victim said.
Rashmitarani Sahu, an inspector at the Bhubaneswar cyber police station, discussed the incident “An IT professional from the Bhubaneswar area has stated that after posting an advertisement for marriage on Bharat Matrimony, he met a woman and was duped. A case of an economic offence has been reported in this regard to the cyber police station. There is an investigation going on. More information will be provided once the investigation is complete.”
