President Droupadi Murmu presented Iswar Chandra Nayak of Odisha with the national award for excellence in teaching on Monday during a ceremony held at Vigyan Bhavan in New Delhi. Iswar, an assistant teacher at a public upper primary school in the Nimapara block of the Puri district’s Kanapur, was one of 45 people nationwide to earn the honour. He had left his previous position as a textile engineer and had spent the last 22 years teaching.

Iswar was selected for the prestigious annual award given by the Ministry of Education for his publications in both academic and non-academic fields. The prize includes a silver medal, a monetary prize of Rs. 50,000, and a certificate of merit.

“There is nothing more fulfilling than being an educator and forming young brains, thus I left the engineering field to enter the teaching field. These years have been the happiest of my life, according to Iswar, who serves as a state resource person for the department of school and mass education.
