On Friday, Sasmit Patra, a member of the Rajya Sabha, was chosen by BJD President and Chief Minister of Odisha Naveen Patnaik to lead the party in the upper house of Parliament.
Sulata Deo, a first-time member of parliament, has been named the party’s chief whip in the house, according to a statement from BJD organisational secretary Pranab Prakash Das.
Unopposed candidates Patra and Deo were sworn in as members of the Rajya Sabha on July 18 and July 8, respectively.
After Prasanna Acharya’s term as BJD leader in the RS came to an end, the position fell empty. The BJD currently has nine representatives in the house.
