Teachers from across the state demonstrated at the Mahatma Gandhi Marg in Bhubaneswar on Sunday to press their demands, causing traffic to halt in the area.
Protesters demanded annual raises for those who had been hired under contract during their first six years of employment before being regularized, as well as a ban on contractual appointments by the state government.
They also demanded pay comparable to that of teachers hired by the national government.
Despite having qualifications comparable to high school teachers, some of them claimed to be paid less.
According to a source at the state secretariat, after about four hours of protesting, a delegation of the agitating teachers met with representatives of the education department at the state secretariat.
The government is currently unable to provide them with assurances due to the model code of conduct in place in the Padampur assembly constituency, according to a secretariat source.
