Odisha fell to 16th place in the third edition of the India Innovation Index, released on Thursday by NITI Aayog. The state ranked 12th in the first edition of the index, which was released in October 2019, and 14th in the second edition, which will be released in 2020.

The innovation index ranks at least 17 states based on their innovation capabilities and performance. Odisha is ranked sixteenth out of seventeen states.

According to reports, the ranking is being done to promote competitive federalism among all states and Union Territories in order to catalyse the nation’s innovation outcome.

In the innovation rankings, states such as Maharashtra, Telangana, Kerala, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Punjab, and Haryana outperformed Odisha. Odisha came in 16th place with 11.42 points.

According to the NITI Aayog index 2020, Karnataka remains the top ranking major state in innovation.

The India Innovation Index 2020 ranks states and union territories according to their relative performance in supporting innovation, with the goal of empowering them to improve their innovation policies by highlighting their strengths and weaknesses.
