In a landmark initiative aimed at upholding Odisha’s spiritual heritage and cultural identity, the state government is set to impose a complete ban on the sale of liquor and non-vegetarian food items in and around the Shree Jagannath Temple in Puri.

The move, conceptualised and driven by Law Minister Shri Prithiviraj Harichandan, reflects a deep commitment to preserving the sanctity of the 12th-century shrine, one of the most revered pilgrimage destinations in the world.

Speaking on Tuesday, Harichandan reaffirmed his government’s unwavering stance on safeguarding the dignity of the temple precinct.

“All liquor outlets operating within a one-kilometre radius of the Jagannath Temple will be shut down. Once the policy framework is finalised, the decision will be implemented without compromise,” he said, underscoring the state’s priority on faith, discipline, and reverence.

Beyond the liquor ban, the government also plans to prohibit the sale of non-vegetarian food items along the iconic Badadanda (Grand Road) and adjoining lanes — the spiritual corridor that guides millions of devotees to the sanctum of Lord Jagannath.

Officials described the reform as part of a larger vision crafted by Harichandan — one that blends heritage protection with urban order, ensuring that Puri evolves as a model spiritual city rooted in tradition yet equipped for modern pilgrimage management.

Over the past months, the Law Minister has emerged as a dynamic and visionary face in Odisha’s cabinet, spearheading initiatives that bridge governance with culture. His emphasis on ethical administration, temple discipline, and public morality has found resonance across diverse sections — from priests and servitors to local residents and devotees nationwide.

“This is not merely a policy decision; it is an expression of Odisha’s timeless spiritual conscience,” a senior official noted, adding that Harichandan’s proactive leadership has inspired a new administrative ethos that places culture at the heart of policy.

As Odisha prepares to operationalise the new framework, the Law Minister’s efforts are being hailed as a turning point in heritage governance — reaffirming the state’s image as the cultural soul of India.

With Prithiviraj Harichandan at the helm, Odisha’s temple towns are poised for a renaissance — one where faith, order, and vision come together to redefine responsible governance rooted in values.
