Bhubaneswar, 05 July 2019: Higher Education Department today issued a formal notification of extension of working hours of lecturers in government and aided non-government colleges to seven hours. The department also made 75 percent attendance mandatory for students.

“All teachers posted in government colleges and aided non-government colleges of the state (irrespective of their actual designation), including the principal, shall henceforth perform duty for atleast seven hours on every working day,” read the notification.

However, the new norm will not be applicable for guest faculties. “ In addition to normal teaching related works, teachers are required to devote time for library, research, taking extra classes for late entrants, taking corrective classes for needy students, monitoring student attendance, assisting the college authority in teaching and non-teaching assignments,” stated the notification.

The decision to extend the working hour was taken during a meeting between government college principals and Higher Education Department officials in the state capital on June 29.

The notification also said that students with attendance of less than 75 percent will not be allowed to appear in the end term examination. The department has also asked the college authorities to monitor attendance on monthly basis and inform the parents accordingly.
