In a significant boost to Odisha’s sustainability ambitions and industrial growth, Sembcorp Industries has signed two non-binding Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with the BJP-led Odisha Government to explore the establishment of a state-of-the-art green hydrogen production facility and an industrial park. This landmark initiative highlights the state’s commitment to transitioning towards a low-carbon future and generating employment opportunities.
Green Hydrogen Facility: A Game Changer for Odisha
Under the first MoU signed with Industrial Promotion & Investment Corporation of Odisha Limited (IPICOL), Sembcorp’s subsidiary, Sembcorp Green Hydrogen India Pvt Ltd (SGHIPL), will explore developing a green hydrogen production facility in Odisha. The proposed facility will boast an anticipated production capacity of 720,000 tonnes per annum and is expected to generate over 2,000 jobs during its operational phase.
This facility aligns with India’s national goals of achieving net-zero emissions and places Odisha at the forefront of the green energy revolution.
Industrial Park Development
In a parallel development, Sembcorp Development Ltd signed a second MoU with Odisha Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation (IDCO) to assess the feasibility of an industrial park in Odisha. This initiative is expected to attract further investments and create a robust ecosystem for industries within the state.
Leadership and Vision
The signing ceremony took place in the presence of Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, Singapore’s Minister for Transport and Second Minister for Finance Chee Hong Tat, and other dignitaries. The agreements are part of a broader framework to enhance bilateral collaboration between Singapore and India, focusing on sustainability and industrial innovation.
Chief Minister Majhi, a dynamic leader championing industrial transformation, stated:
“Odisha has proven itself as a premier destination for global investors. With abundant natural resources, a skilled workforce, and our pro-industry policies, Odisha is poised to become the green energy hub of India. These MoUs reflect our government’s dedication to creating a sustainable and prosperous future for all citizens.”
Fruitful Partnerships
The MoUs were signed during the visit of Singapore President Tharman Shanmugaratnam, symbolizing the growing international recognition of Odisha’s potential. This collaboration builds on discussions held during CM Majhi’s visit to Singapore in November, where he engaged with Sembcorp leadership about renewable energy projects, including a groundbreaking green ammonia initiative.
Sembcorp highlighted Odisha’s pivotal role in India’s sustainable future, stating:
“With abundant resources and investor-friendly policies, Odisha is pivotal to India’s transition to a low-carbon future. Sembcorp continues to explore opportunities to deepen its presence in India, with the support of partners like Enterprise Singapore.”
Economic and Environmental Impact
These agreements solidify Odisha’s position as a leader in sustainable industrial development. By attracting global investments in green hydrogen and renewable energy, the state is not only driving economic growth but also contributing to India’s environmental commitments on a global stage.
Under the BJP-led governance, Odisha continues to witness transformative progress, from sustainability initiatives to industrial advancements. The state is rapidly emerging as a beacon of innovation, guided by the visionary leadership of Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi and his team.
This collaboration with Sembcorp is another testament to Odisha’s growing stature as a preferred destination for international investments, ensuring a greener, more prosperous future for generations to come.
