The Odisha government has announced an extension of its support to Hockey India by another three years, extending their sponsorship until 2036. This move underscores the state’s continued commitment to nurturing and promoting the sport at both national and international levels.

A Visionary Move by Odisha’s CM Mohan Charan Majhi

Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi declared that the decision to extend Odisha’s sponsorship of Indian hockey aligns with the goals of ‘Vision Odisha: 2036’. This initiative is designed to mark and celebrate the state’s 100th year of formation, reflecting a long-term vision for sports and overall development.

“Odisha has always been at the forefront of supporting sports, and extending our sponsorship of Hockey India by three more years is a testament to our dedication,” said CM Majhi. “This initiative is not just about supporting hockey but is part of our broader vision for the state as we approach our centenary year.”

High-Level Support and Strategic Partnership

The announcement came following a high-level meeting attended by notable figures including Hockey India President Dr. Dilip Tirkey, Secretary General Bhola Nath Singh, Minister of State for Sports & Youth Services Suryabanshi Suraj, Chief Secretary & Chief Development Commissioner Pradeep Kumar Jena, IAS, and Commissioner-Cum-Secretary R. Vineel Krishna, IAS.

Dr. Tirkey expressed his gratitude, stating, “We are deeply thankful to the Government of Odisha for their steadfast support and commitment to Indian hockey. This partnership has played a pivotal role in uplifting the sport across our nation.”

Building on a Strong Legacy

The outgoing Naveen Patnaik-led government had previously extended its sponsorship of the Men’s and Women’s national hockey teams (both senior and junior) until 2033. This continuity of support has transformed Odisha into a hub for hockey, significantly benefiting the sport in India.

Celebrating Odisha’s Centenary Year

The year 2036 has been symbolically chosen to coincide with Odisha celebrating the centenary year of its statehood. This long-term sponsorship not only supports the sport but also aligns with the state’s broader cultural and historical milestones.

Continued Commitment to Sports Development

Since 2018, Odisha has been the official sponsor of India’s national hockey teams across genders and age levels. This backing has provided a significant boost to the sport, helping Indian hockey teams achieve remarkable success on the international stage.

Minister of State for Sports & Youth Services Suryabanshi Suraj commented, “Our continued sponsorship is a reflection of our commitment to fostering sports talent and providing our athletes with the best possible resources and support. As we look forward to 2036, we aim to make Odisha a global sports destination.”

A Bright Future for Indian Hockey

With the extension of this sponsorship, Odisha reaffirms its role as a crucial supporter of Indian hockey. This partnership not only aids in the sport’s development but also enhances the state’s reputation as a key player in the sports arena.

Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi’s leadership and vision are set to propel Odisha towards new heights, ensuring that the state’s centenary year is marked by sporting excellence and a robust legacy of supporting national sports.
