Distinguished career diplomat Biraja Prasad passed away in his sleep in Dushanbe, Tajikistan on early Saturday morning.

Belonging to Odisha, the 1988-batch Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer was serving as the Ambassador of India in the Republic of Tajikistan since November 6, 2015.

Prasad was the youngest IFS officer to be appointed as an Ambassador to any country. He was a very popular diplomat.

Earlier, he was posted at the Embassy of India in Madrid, Spain as the Deputy Chief of Mission. He served extensively in India and abroad.

Prasad left behind his wife Pooja Mishra and a son. He was the brother-in-law of senior IAS officer Bishnupada Sethi, Secretary of Fishery and ARD in Odisha and son-in-law of Captain (retired) Subash Chandra Mishra.
