In a significant step towards environmental preservation, the Odisha government has introduced artificial intelligence (AI) technology to combat forest fires during the peak summer season. The move aims to safeguard the state’s rich biodiversity and protect wildlife from the devastating effects of wildfires.
AI-Based Cameras for Early Detection
The government has installed AI-based cameras across Odisha’s forests to ensure early detection of forest fires. These cameras are designed to identify potential fire outbreaks swiftly, enabling authorities to mobilize personnel and equipment efficiently.
“The state government is introducing various measures to combat forest fires in Odisha. We have installed AI-based cameras and deployed special squads in forests to check wildfires. The government is monitoring the situation regularly,” said Ganesh Ram Singhkhuntia, Odisha’s Forest, Environment, and Climate Change Minister.
Advanced Technology and Equipment
In addition to AI-based cameras, the state has equipped forest personnel with advanced tools to improve their response to wildfires. Last year, Odisha procured 10 all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) for accessing remote and challenging terrains in the Similipal Tiger Reserve (STR) in Mayurbhanj district.
These ATVs are capable of transporting forest staff and firefighting equipment, such as blowers, directly to fire-prone areas. The state government has also introduced Very Small Aperture Terminal (VSAT) technology to facilitate quick and efficient communication among forest personnel.
A Proactive Approach
The introduction of AI technology and advanced firefighting tools reflects Odisha’s proactive approach to addressing the growing threat of forest fires. The Similipal Tiger Reserve, a biodiversity hotspot, has often faced challenges during wildfire seasons. These measures aim to enhance the state’s preparedness and minimize the impact on the ecosystem.
By leveraging technology and investing in modern firefighting capabilities, Odisha is setting a benchmark in environmental conservation and wildfire management. These initiatives not only protect wildlife but also contribute to sustainable forest management, ensuring the safety of natural resources for future generations.
