Bhadrak: Eminent freedom fighter Goura Chandra Mohapatra passed away at the district headquarters hospital (DHH) here today. He was 104.
According to family members Mohapatra was suffering from old age related ailments and was bed-ridden for a long time. He was rushed to the DHH after his condition deteriorated today; however, he passed away at 5.55 PM.
Mohapatra was the son of nationalist poet Kantakabi Laxmikanta Mohapatra and actively participated in the freedom movement, Quit India movement and later worked as academics.
Prabhukalyan Mohapatra, one of his sons – out of 13 children (nine sons, four daughters) – is an Odisha-based journalist.
Meanwhile, Odisha Governor Prof. Ganeshi Lal and Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik along with several Odisha Ministers and people of different walks of lives condoled the death of the veteran freedom fighter.
“Goura Chandra Mohapatra was a great Gandhian and his contribution to our social life is noteworthy. He was also acclaimed writer and thinker,” said the Governor while conveying his deep sympathy to the bereaved family.
Patnaik also condoled the demise of the centenarian freedom fighter and said, “As a true Gandhian he has dedicated his entire life for the promotion of Gandhian values and dedicated himself for social upliftment. In his death, we lost one of the last pillars of the freedom movement.”
