Man gets 7-yr rigorous imprisonment for killing wife

Dhenkanal,Nov.28: A district and sessions court in Dhenkanal on Wednesday sentenced a man to seven years rigorous imprisonment after convicting him for the murder of his wife.

The district and sessions judge, Taraprasad Rath, also imposed a penalty of Rs 5,000 on the convict, Ajay Naya (44). The convict will have to serve an additional jail term of two months in case of failure to pay the penalty.

According to sources, Ajay, a resident of Nuakote village in Hindol block in the district had been working in Bhubaneswar. He used to torture his wife Damayanti (34), who was staying in the village, on suspicion of having an extra-marital affair. Fed up with the torture, Damayanti along with her three children started living with her parents.

Subsequently, Ajay convinced her and brought her home. On the fateful day of March 5, 2017, Ajay again got into a fight with his wife and beaten her to death.

On the basis of a complaint lodged by the deceased’s brother, the accused was arrested. The district and sessions judge pronounced the verdict on the basis of the statements of 11 witnesses in the case.
