Lata Mangeshkar, 92, died on Sunday, according to her sister Usha Mangeshkar. The ‘Queen of Melody,’ as she is also known, has been extremely important in recent weeks. For several weeks, she was receiving treatment at Mumbai’s Breach Candy Hospital. Mangeshkar was admitted to the hospital in January after being diagnosed with pneumonia and testing positive for the novel Coronavirus. She had been on the ventilator for several weeks before being taken off on January 28 due to signs of improvement.
Her health deteriorated again on Saturday, and she was placed back on the ventilator.
Mangeshkar, regarded as one of the greatest playback singers in Indian cinema, began her career at the age of 13 in 1942 and has sung over 30,000 songs in various Indian languages.
She has sung a number of memorable songs in her seven-decade career, including “Ajeeb dastan hai ye,” “Sunn Sahiba sunn,” “Kaanta laga,” “Pyar kiya to darna kya,” and “Neela asman so gaya.”
The singer, dubbed “Melody Queen of India,” has received the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honour, as well as the Padma Bhushan, Padma Vibhushan, and Dada Saheb Phalke Award.
