King Charles III succeeded Queen Elizabeth II as the reigning king. At the age of 73, he ascended to the throne. With this, conversations regarding his transition from “Prince Charles” to “His Majesty the King” have begun. Three times, Queen Elizabeth II visited India. Prince Charles reportedly visited Odisha in 1980 when he was 32 years old. At the time, the late Janaki Ballabh Patnaik served as the state’s chief minister, and C. Prince Charles visited the State, and M. Poonacha was there.

Charles visited the village of Haripur in the Puri district while staying at the Governor’s residence in Bhubaneswar. Along with police officials and the district magistrate of the time, he visited the village. The village didn’t have the same houses or pucca roads as it does now. Prince Charles nevertheless visited the village while under heavy security.

In the community, Prince Charles also sipped green coconut. In addition, he witnessed the harvesting of green coconuts from the tree and the weaving of baskets.

The people are remembering his 42-year-old unforgettable visit now that Prince Charles is the new Queen Elizabeth II. In 1980, Prince Charles visited our community. I had only turned 10 or 12 years old at the time. We feel fortunate and glad to have seen him here now that he has taken the throne after the passing of his mother, said a resident of Haripur village.
