Justice can never be instant and “loses its character as justice” if it becomes revenge, Chief Justice Sharad Arvind Bobde said Saturday at an event in Jodhpur.
Chief Justice Bobde’s remarks come after four young men accused of rape and murder were killed on Friday in what the Telangana police say was an encounter. The police action had its critics, but was largely welcomed by the public.
Chief Justice Bobde was speaking at the inauguration of a new Rajasthan High Court building, with Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad in attendance.
He made a reference to “recent events” in the country as explained that the criminal justice system should reconsider its position towards laxity and the time taken to dispose of criminal matters.
#WATCH: Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sharad Arvind Bobde: I don’t think justice can ever be or ought to be instant. And justice must never ever take the form of revenge. I believe justice loses its character of justice if it becomes a revenge.
They had been taken to the scene of crime to recover the victim’s phone, and others pertaining to the case.
The police said they shot the accused after two of the men opened fire at them after snatching their weapons, besides attacking them with stones and sticks.
