Former Odisha Chief Minister Shri Naveen Patnaik and the leader of the Opposition in Odisha expressed his joy and pride while speaking with the Indian men’s hockey team after they secured a bronze medal at the Paris Olympics on August 8. Naveen Patnaik, known for his state’s significant contributions to Indian hockey, congratulated the team via video call, especially praising Odisha’s own Amit Rohidas. Patnaik’s call followed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s, marking a celebratory moment for Indian hockey, which has now achieved consecutive Olympic medals for the first time in 52 years.

Odisha’s involvement in hockey began in 2018, under Patnaik’s leadership, when it became the principal sponsor of the Indian hockey team. This partnership has seen Odisha host major international events and play a crucial role in the sport’s development. With the recent extension of the sponsorship deal, the state continues to strengthen its commitment to Indian hockey, a legacy now carried forward by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi.

Amit Rohidas, one of the team’s stars, expressed deep gratitude to Patnaik for the unwavering support that has been crucial to the team’s success.

The victory in Paris not only highlights the prowess of the Indian team but also underscores Odisha’s pivotal role in the revival and growth of hockey in the country.
