Odisha Deputy Chief Minister KV Singh Deo has underscored the critical importance of upholding Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) goals for industrial development in the state. Addressing the esteemed audience at the third edition of the Sambad CEO Conclave as the chief guest, Singh Deo emphasized the imperative for industries to strike a balance between developmental activities and environmental stewardship.

Emphasis on Compensatory Afforestation

Singh Deo highlighted that industries involved in developmental projects requiring tree felling must offset this impact by planting an equal number of saplings, adhering strictly to environmental norms. “Industrial units should prioritize compensatory afforestation through their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives,” he stressed. He called upon all stakeholders to commit to ESG principles, aiming to bring about transformative improvements in people’s lives.

Vision for a New Odisha

Revenue Minister Suresh Pujari, also present at the conclave, likened the government’s vision for Odisha to the legendary craftsmanship of ‘Bishu Maharana’. “We are committed to constructing a new Odisha with dedication and precision,” Pujari declared, emphasizing the government’s focus on sustainable development and environmental responsibility.

Understanding ESG: Environmental, Social, and Governance

ESG criteria evaluate a company’s sustainability and ethical impact, guiding stakeholders, including investors and consumers, in their decisions:

  1. Environmental (E):
  • Climate Change: Measures efforts to mitigate carbon emissions and adopt renewable energy sources.
  • Resource Management: Evaluates practices in managing natural resources sustainably.
  • Pollution and Waste: Assesses policies for managing waste and emissions.

  1. Social (S):
  • Labor Practices: Evaluates employee treatment and workplace conditions.
  • Community Engagement: Considers impacts on local communities and economic contributions.
  • Customer Privacy: Examines data protection and privacy policies.

  1. Governance (G):
  • Board Diversity: Evaluates board composition and independence.
  • Ethical Practices: Assesses transparency, anti-corruption measures, and business ethics.
  • Shareholder Rights: Considers shareholder protections and rights.

Importance of ESG Integration

  • Investment Decisions: ESG-compliant companies are seen as sustainable and ethical investments.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Helps in meeting regulatory standards and avoiding legal risks.
  • Reputation Enhancement: Builds trust among stakeholders and enhances brand value.
  • Operational Efficiency: Promotes cost savings through sustainable practices.

Upholding Environmental Responsibility

Sambad Editor Tanaya Patnaik highlighted the urgency of addressing environmental challenges. “Sustainable development hinges on tackling environmental issues effectively,” she asserted, urging industries to adopt eco-friendly practices in their operations.

Notable Attendees and Industry Leadership

The conclave witnessed participation from influential industry leaders, including Avinash Pandey, CEO of ABP Network; Sam Balsara, Chairman of Madison World; and Srinivasan Swamy, Chairman of AFAA. Their presence underscored the pivotal role of corporate leadership in promoting sustainable industrial practices.

A Collective Commitment

The call to action at the Sambad CEO Conclave resonated with the shared responsibility of industries to prioritize both growth and environmental impact. By adhering steadfastly to ESG goals, industrial units in Odisha are poised to set a benchmark for sustainable development and contribute meaningfully to a balanced future for the state.

As Odisha progresses on its development trajectory, the integration of ESG principles remains central to ensuring economic advancement goes hand in hand with environmental stewardship. Collaborative efforts between government, industries, and communities will be instrumental in fostering a resilient and sustainable Odisha for generations to come.
