A 22-year-old daughter of a senior IPS officer in Odisha has undergone Sex Reassignment Surgery (SRS), also known as a sex change operation, in a rare case.
Following her parents’ approval, the girl underwent surgery in Delhi. She is currently studying management in the United States.
Her parents have begun the formal process of changing her name and gender, which will be reflected in her passport and other documents.
Notably, sex reassignment surgery (SRS) is a genital reconstruction surgery procedure that involves changing the genitalia from female to male and vice versa.
Converting female anatomy to male anatomy entails reconstructing a male private organ via microvascular surgery after removing the uterus, ovary, and breasts. Several hormone doses are administered prior to and following surgery to allow the patient to develop desired body (male or female) characteristics.
The surgery is performed in stages, with a minimum of three to four months between each stage. The total reconstruction surgery usually takes about a year.
SRS from female to male (FTM), which is quite rare in Odisha, and male to female (MTF) costs around Rs 3.5 lakh and Rs 2.5 lakh in the state, respectively.
