To reduce environmental pollution, the state government of Odisha has decided to trash more than 20.39 lakh automobiles that are more than 15 years old and inoperable. Government vehicles will be destroyed by March 15 of this year as part of the first phase.
This was said by the state’s minister of transportation, Tukuni Sahu, on Thursday in this state legislature. The state government has previously created the Registered Vehicle Scrapping Facility Policy-2022 to dispose of unfit and older than 15-year-old automobiles.
12,99,351 motorbikes and scooters were among the 20,39,500 lakh obsolete vehicles in total. There will also be the scrapping of 2.37 lakh mopeds, 1.25 lakh cars and cabs, 48,104 three-wheelers, 1.54 lakh goods carriers, 12,369 buses, more than 50,000 tractors, and 870 ambulances, among other vehicles. Yet, the state’s 80.2 lakh vehicles are in good condition.
Vehicle manufacturers are advised to offer a 5% discount on the new vehicle on production of scrapping certificates issued by the government-approved vehicle scrapping units, according to the Odisha Motor Vehicles (Registration and Functions of Vehicle Scrapping Facility) Policy, 2022, which was announced on November 30 of last year.
After the creation of registered vehicle scrapping facilities (RVSFs) or units, the old vehicles will be disposed of in stages. After receiving the used cars, the scrap yards will give the owners certificates of deposit. Investors who want to put up RVSFs, which will be considered as industrial units, can also benefit from the policy.
When registering a new car against the submission of a certificate of deposit or a scrapping certificate, the government will grant a motor vehicle tax concession of 25% for non-transport vehicles and 15% for transport vehicles. In addition, these new vehicles are exempt from paying the certificate of registration charge.
“The scrap value for the old vehicles will be given by the scrapping centre approximately 6% of the ex-showroom price prevailing at the time of the scrapping. In case the vehicle is not being manufactured any more, the scrapped value will be decided via negotiation between the vehicle owner and the scrapping centre operator,” said the policy.
