An official said the man introduced himself to the woman as Deepak Panda and claimed to be a sub-inspector in the Mayurbhanj district.
The Odisha Police nabbed a man on Wednesday for allegedly impersonating a police officer and defrauding a woman inspector in Sundargarh district of 4.5 lakh in what appeared to be a Bollywood conman movie reenactment.
According to an official, Chittaranjan Tarai introduced himself to the woman as Deepak Panda and claimed to be a sub-inspector in the Mayurbhanj district.
According to the allegation filed in Sundargarh town, the woman, who is the inspector in charge of the Lephripara police station, paid the money after Tarai promised to sell her land in Bhubaneswar.
When he failed to do so, she got skeptical and discovered there was no officer in Baisinga with the name he had provided her. Madhusikta Mishra, a Subdivisional Police Officer (SDPO), said.
The plaintiff requested the land or the money back, but Tarai demanded an additional Rs.50,000/- and threatened her with grave consequences if she did not comply. According to the official, he allegedly misbehaved with the woman at the hotel where they met.
According to the SDPO, Tarai’s WhatsApp and phone records revealed that he had the numbers of multiple female police officers.
According to preliminary evidence, he has defrauded a number of people. Police have launched an investigation.
