The heat wave-like conditions are likely to prevail over Odisha for a week with mercury level reaching around 44 degrees Celsius in some places, a senior IMD official said.

“The high temperature and heat wave conditions are due to northwesterly dry and hot wind from northwest parts of India towards Odisha coast in addition to clear sky condition here,” Sarat Chandra Sahu, director IMD, Bhubaneswar, said.

Cyclonic circulation over east-central Bay of Bengal and subsequent formation of low pressure there in 48 hours favours the continuation of flow of dry and hot northwesterly wind through Odisha coast, he pointed out.

Temperature ranging from 42 degrees Celsius to 44 degrees Celsius in most parts of Odisha barring few stations coastal and hill stations in Odisha may prevail during the next seven days, Sahu said, adding that sea breeze may not be prominent or absent during this period.

“So, uncomfortable like situation at both day and night will be experienced over coastal and interior districts during this period,” the IMD director said.

Meanwhile, eight places of the state yesterday recorded temperature above 40 degrees Celsius while Titlagarh sizzled at 43.5 degrees Celsius.

According to reports, Sambalpur and Hirakud recorded a temperature of 43 degrees Celsius each yesterday.
