World Habitat Awards 2023 from UN-Habitat
Odisha’s Jaga Mission, a 5T project, earned the state the 2023 World Habitat Awards from UN-Habitat. The awards recognise and spotlight remarkable, ground-breaking, and innovative housing concepts, projects, and initiatives from around the globe. The Jaga mission is a programme for slum rehabilitation and land titling that seeks to improve the lives of slum inhabitants.
Information on Jaga Mission
The largest land titling and slum improvement programme in the world, known as Jaga Mission, attempts to improve the lives of slum people. The Government of Odisha has set the ambitious goal of being the first slum-free state in India and is conducting the Jaga Mission initiative to renovate all of the state’s 2,919 slums under the inspiring leadership of Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik. Over the course of the initiative’s last five years, 1,75,000 people have received secure land tenure. 2,724 slums have had 100% of their homes connected to a water pipe, 707 slums have been completely converted into liveable habitats, 100% of the households in 666 slums have access to individual toilets, and 8 cities have been declared slum-free.
The Jaga mission in Odisha earlier this year won a World Habitat Award for its success in giving slum inhabitants secure land tenure.
