NEW DELHI:The initial inquiry by the Delhi Police in the Tis Hazari Court incident indicates that the clashes between lawyers and police started after ‘false information’ was spread among the lawyers.

Sources within the Delhi Police have told India Today TV that after carrying out a probe for four days, the investigators suspect that false information was spread at Tis Hazari that police has attacked a lawyer inside the lockup and he has been badly beaten up.

Since Delhi Bar Association (DBA) polls were to take place on November 5, several lawyers had come to campaign. Most of the lawyers who were fighting elections had also brought “outsiders” in large numbers on the day of the incident.

Sources say that as soon as the word spread that a particular lawyer has been “dragged” and “beaten”, angry lawyers attacked the police post and lockup.

The CCTV footage of the lockup shows the lawyer entering with policemen and he was not assaulted.

The Crime Branch team investigating the matter will now record the statements of lawyers who were part of the entire incident and present at the spot.

The police have also identified three lawyers, including a woman lawyer, who indulged in violence.

The crime branch team is also taking help of constables (with 20-odd years of experience, who regularly go to Tihar Jail with undertrials) to identify the instigators.

Sources told India Today TV that investigators have found that few of the lawyers who assaulted policemen do not practice at Tis Hazari Court.

Statements of injured cops have been recorded by the SIT officials who have given an account of entire violence. The injured cops also told the investigators that many had to run for cover to save themselves.

In his statement, the cop who fired the shot at the crowd has said that it was an act of self-defence and that he was trying to save his seniors and also prevent lawyers from entering the lockup where undertrials were locked.

The clashes between lawyers and police, which started on November 2, left many lawyers and policemen injured.

Since then, several lawyers have assaulted policemen outside different courts in Delhi and Wednesday witnessed huge protest by them at Rohini, Saket and Patiala House Court.

On Tuesday, over 10,000 cops protested out Delhi Police Headquarters against the action taken against the policemen and ‘non-action’ against the lawyers
