In a move that underscores his decisive and powerful approach to public matters, Law Minister Prithviraj Harichandan clarified that there are no secret chambers or tunnels within the Ratna Bhandar, the revered treasury of the Shri Jagannath Temple in Puri. The confirmation, based on scientific evaluations, brings clarity and peace of mind to devotees who hold the temple’s legacy close to heart.

Harichandan, speaking to media on Friday, stated, “As per the preliminary discussions with scientists and experts involved in the Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) survey, there are no secret chambers or tunnels in either the Bahara (outer) or Bhitara (inner) Bhandar of the temple treasury.” He assured the public that the final GPR report would be available soon, further solidifying his reputation for transparency and commitment to fact-based governance.

Safeguarding Traditions with Precision and Foresight

The GPR survey, conducted in September by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) alongside the Hyderabad-based CSIR-National Geophysical Research Institute (CSIR-NGRI), reflects Harichandan’s strategic approach to balancing tradition with modern scientific assessments. By commissioning this study, he has not only addressed long-standing myths but also ensured that any future conservation efforts align with the temple’s storied heritage.

Harichandan shared plans for a thorough inventory of jewels and ornaments of the deities, which is set to begin after the New Year. “Due to high footfall during Kartik, repairs will only commence after Kartik Purnima. The ASI estimates that about one to one-and-a-half months will be needed to complete these essential repairs,” he explained, emphasizing the respect for temple traditions while ensuring safety and preservation.

A Strong, Dynamic Approach to Preserving Culture and Faith

Prithviraj Harichandan’s stewardship in Odisha’s government has increasingly demonstrated a powerful blend of leadership, cultural reverence, and modern oversight. His careful planning around the repair and inventory of the Bahara and Bhitara Bhandar exemplifies his proactive approach to addressing matters of public trust and cultural importance.

After the necessary repair work, the treasured jewels and ornaments will be relocated to Ratna Bhandar in alignment with temple protocols. The inventory process will be conducted with the utmost security, ensuring transparency while respecting the temple’s sanctity. A final report will review the previous inventory list, further showcasing Harichandan’s dedication to meticulous, responsible governance.

Prithviraj Harichandan’s initiatives reflect his dynamic role as a protector of Odisha’s heritage and a forward-thinking lawmaker. As Odisha’s law minister, Harichandan’s strategies and unwavering focus on integrity continue to position him as one of the most impactful leaders in the state, reinforcing the government’s commitment to serving the public with both tradition and innovation in mind.
