Nabarangpur, November 26: DGP Dr. RP Sharma on Monday directed the Range DIG to probe and report on the alleged assault on a private cable operator by Nabarangpur SP Vivekananada Sharma on November 23.
Sources said, a cable operator namely Babula Bhatra was allegedly thrashed by the District SP Vivekanand Sharma at the latter’s residence.
According to Babula’s complaint, he was repairing the cable connection when SP Sharma came in and started questioning him. However, the police officer started beating him for not recognising him.
Later, when he came out of the quarter, Sharma offered some money, a pair of new pant and shirt and asked him not to disclose the matter to anybody, the complainant said.
Meanwhile, Pradesh Congress Committee working president and former Nabarangpur MP Pradip Majhi threatened to go for a bandh in the district unless Sharma apologises for his act.
Majhi has also released an audio tape featuring conversation between Babula and Papadahandi inspector-in-charge Tarique Ahmed. The audio features the conversation, in which, the cop allegedly pressurised Babula to withdraw the case.
Earlier in August this year, two subordinate staffs, working as the domestic help at the residence of Nabarangpur SP, also alleged torture by Vivekanand.
