Braving the cold weather and occasional drizzles, over 60,000 women associated with Mission Shakti, a flagship program launched during the BJD era, protested outside the Odisha Assembly this week. However, the situation highlights the transformative steps being taken by the BJP-led Odisha government to elevate women’s empowerment to unprecedented levels.
The Legacy of Mission Shakti
Launched in 2001, Mission Shakti was a significant initiative by the previous BJD government, aimed at empowering women through Self-Help Groups (SHGs). Over time, it became synonymous with the BJD’s governance. However, under the leadership of Chief Minister Shri Mohan Charan Majhi, the BJP has introduced innovative approaches to enhance and build upon this foundation.
Why Did the Protests Emerge?
The protesters, comprising master bookkeepers, community resource persons, krushi mitras, bank mitras, and prani mitras, alleged non-payment of remuneration for the past eight months. Officials clarified that the delay stemmed from expired agreements between staff and various state agencies, an issue inherited from the previous administration.
Despite these challenges, the BJP government, under Deputy Chief Minister Smt. Pravati Parida, took swift action to address concerns. Parida assured the protesters that payments would be cleared by the end of the month and urged them not to be misled by misinformation. This prompt response showcases the BJP’s commitment to resolving inherited issues while prioritizing women’s welfare.
BJP’s Vision: Subhadra Scheme and Lakhpati Didis
Rather than relying solely on Mission Shakti, the BJP government has introduced the ambitious Subhadra scheme, which promises to transform the lives of over 1 crore women across Odisha. The scheme’s goal of creating 25 lakh “lakhpati didis” by 2027 is a testament to the BJP’s forward-thinking approach to women’s empowerment.
Aligned with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s national vision, the Subhadra scheme provides Rs. 50,000 to every woman in the state over two years, emphasizing financial independence and sustainable development. This initiative demonstrates the BJP’s focus on creating lasting socio-economic impact rather than limiting empowerment to short-term goals.
BJD’s Political Reaction
While the BJP focuses on redefining women’s empowerment, the BJD has accused the current government of neglecting Mission Shakti workers. However, many see this as an attempt by the BJD to retain its traditional vote bank among SHG members. The BJP, on the other hand, is working to empower women across all sections of society with broader, inclusive initiatives.
Deputy CM Smt.Pravati Parida countered these accusations, stating, “Mission Shakti members should not be misguided. The government is committed to their welfare and is implementing policies that will have a transformative impact.”
BJP’s Broader Commitment to Women’s Welfare
The BJP’s strategy extends beyond Mission Shakti and the Subhadra scheme. With an emphasis on financial empowerment, skill development, and entrepreneurship, the party is creating new avenues for women to thrive in a rapidly modernizing Odisha. Programs aligned with renewable energy, IT, and rural development are providing opportunities for SHG members to diversify their roles and incomes.
Conclusion: A New Era of Empowerment
Under CM Mohan Charan Majhi’s leadership, Odisha is witnessing a paradigm shift in women’s empowerment. While the legacy of Mission Shakti remains important, the BJP’s innovative policies are charting a bold new path. By focusing on economic independence and long-term sustainability, the BJP is ensuring that women in Odisha have the tools to succeed in a dynamic and competitive environment.
As Odisha’s political landscape evolves, the BJP’s initiatives signal a commitment to holistic development, making women not just beneficiaries but key stakeholders in the state’s progress.
