Bhadrak: The eyes of a deceased person were allegedly gouged out at a government hospital in Cuttack city without the knowledge of family members, it is alleged.
As per allegation, the incident took place at SCB Medical College and Hospital on November 11. The deceased person, Nanda Gagrai of Bagurai Adivasi colony in Bhadrak district died while undergoing treatment there.
According to sources, on November 7, Gagrai allegedly consumed poison over family feud. He was initially admitted to the Bhadrak District Headquarter hospital and later shifted to the SCBMCH when his condition deteriorated. However, he died at the SCB hospital on November 11.
“The hospital staff have taken eyes out of my husband’s body without telling us. As we are illiterate, they asked us to give a thumb impression on documents given to us. Today, I got to know that my husband’s eyes went to the eye bank of LV Prasad Eye Institute in Bhubaneswar. We did not know about the eye donation,” alleged Champa Gagrai.
On the other hand, the authorities of LV Prasad Eye Institute have refuted the allegation levelled by the family members of the deceased man.
On Saturday, Bhadrak Town police registered a case against LV Prasad Eye Institute after IGP of Eastern Range directed the district police to probe the matter.
