India is witnessing a fresh surge in COVID-19 cases, prompting health authorities across states to step up surveillance and public awareness efforts. As of May 31, 2025, the country has recorded 3,395 active cases, with Kerala leading at 1,336 cases, followed by Maharashtra and Delhi. The recent spike is primarily attributed to new Omicron subvariants—notably NB.1.8.1 and LF.7—known for their high transmissibility and ability to bypass existing immunity.

While most infections remain mild or asymptomatic, top doctors warn that elderly individuals and those with pre-existing health conditions face heightened risks. Citizens are advised to remain cautious, continue wearing masks in crowded places, adhere to hygiene protocols, and ensure vaccinations and boosters are up to date.

In Odisha, the situation remains largely under control, but the state has not been spared. As of May 31, 2025, Odisha has reported seven active COVID-19 cases, including three new infections detected in Khurda and Bhubaneswar. The first case this year was identified on May 21 in a 75-year-old man with comorbidities, who has since recovered. Recent cases include patients in both government and private healthcare facilities.

Director of Public Health, Dr. Nilakantha Mishra, has advised citizens to consult doctors promptly in case of Severe Acute Respiratory Infections (SARI) or Influenza-Like Illness (ILI) symptoms and to undergo COVID-19 testing as required. Health Secretary Aswathy S. assured the public that there is no cause for panic, and existing 2022 guidelines remain in force, as no fresh directives have been issued by the Centre.

Genome sequencing in Odisha has identified the presence of JN.1, LF.7.9, and XFG sub-variants of Omicron. While these variants are highly transmissible, they have not been associated with severe cases so far. However, Odisha reported its first COVID-related death of 2025—an elderly patient in Bhubaneswar, who had returned from Delhi and tested positive on May 22.

In line with national recommendations, Odisha health officials are urging the public to remain alert and responsible:

  • Avoid forwarding or acting on unverified information from social media or messaging platforms.

  • Follow official advisories from the government and health authorities.

  • Be wary of phishing links, fake websites, and suspicious emails that may exploit the COVID-19 situation for cyberattacks.

  • Educate vulnerable groups, including the elderly, about basic safety protocols, and ensure fire safety systems and health facilities are ready for emergency needs.

As India faces the challenge of new variants and potential waves of infection, the emphasis remains on community vigilance, preparedness, and accurate information. Experts reiterate that there is no need for panic, but continued caution is essential to avoid a repeat of previous COVID-19 waves.

The Odisha government continues to monitor the situation closely, coordinating with national agencies to ensure adequate healthcare capacity, oxygen reserves, and emergency response preparedness.

For accurate information, citizens are urged to stay connected with official health bulletins and avoid spreading or acting upon rumors and unverified content. Let us stand united, vigilant, and prepared.
