Bande Utkala Janani, composed by Laxmikanta Mohapatra in 1912, is not just a song but a profound symbol of Odisha’s cultural and patriotic spirit. Officially adopted as the state anthem on June 7, 2020, this poem played a pivotal role in the early 20th-century movement for Odisha’s statehood. It encapsulates the dignity, resilience, and pride of the Odia people, resonating deeply with their history and identity.

Historical Significance

Presented at the Utkal Sammilani Conference in Balasore in 1912, “Bande Utkala Janani” emerged during a time when Odisha was under British rule. The anthem became a unifying force for Odias, contributing to the linguistic and cultural movement that eventually led to the creation of Odisha as a separate province. The Utkal Sammilani, a key organization in this movement, used patriotic songs like “Bande Utkala Janani” to inspire and mobilize people.

Cultural and Musical Heritage

The anthem reflects Odisha’s historical resilience through various phases of foreign domination, from Mughal to British rule. The lyrics, which personify Odisha as Utkala, symbolize strength and self-respect. The music for “Bande Utkala Janani” was first recorded in 1932, and its modern orchestration was arranged by the renowned Odissi musician Balakrushna Dash. This musical arrangement has become synonymous with the anthem’s enduring message.

Official Recognition and Legacy

The formal recognition of “Bande Utkala Janani” as Odisha’s state anthem came as a response to long-standing public demand, amplified by a call for unity during the COVID-19 pandemic. The song was sung by millions of Odias worldwide on May 30, 2020, to honor frontline workers. It is now a mandatory feature at the end of every session of the Odisha Legislative Assembly and is sung in schools across the state, fostering a sense of pride and unity among the youth.

In its essence, “Bande Utkala Janani” is more than just a song; it is a powerful reminder of Odisha’s rich cultural heritage and the enduring spirit of its people.
