Mumbai: The Marine Drive in the city got a swanky new public toilet which was thrown open for public on Tuesday, on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti.
Constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 90 lakh under the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative, the public facility will be run and maintained by Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).
The facility will be free of cost for public for the next two months after which the civic body may levy a fee. The BMC spends around Rs 25-30 lakh on an average to construct a public toilet but in this case, most of the building material and designing came at zero charge to the civic body.
The public toilet located opposite the Air India building was inaugurated by Yuva Sena chief Aaditya Thackeray on Monday. This is the only public toilet in a 2.8 km radius of the Marine Drive walkway.
According to a civic official, the BMC will have to spend up to Rs 1 lakh per month for the maintenance of the toilet like house-keeping services, sewage transport, and maintenance of solar panels.
