In a firm statement, Odisha’s law minister, Prithviraj Harichandan, has asserted that the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) lacks the authority to set a date for the opening of the Ratna Bhandar (treasure trove) of the Puri Lord Jagannath Temple. This declaration came in response to claims made by the Superintendent of ASI that the Ratna Bhandar would be opened on July 8.

“Today, the management committee meeting was scheduled for the regulation and proper management of the Snana Purnima function of Lord Jagannath. After the meeting concluded, an ASI official told the media that the Ratna Bhandar will be opened on July 8 by the ASI, as if it is the authority to do so. The state government is very serious about this matter,” Harichandan said on Wednesday.

Firm Stance on ASI’s Overreach

Minister Harichandan emphasized that the ASI official’s statement was unauthorized and misleading. He assured that appropriate action would be taken against the concerned official. “A decision on opening the Ratna Bhandar will be taken after thoroughly examining the matter,” Harichandan stated. Highlighting the sensitivity of the issue, he mentioned that the chief administrator has been instructed to write a letter to the Director General of ASI regarding this unauthorized announcement.

Historical and Cultural Significance

The Ratna Bhandar, known for housing the priceless treasures of the Jagannath Temple, has been a subject of significant interest and controversy. Harichandan pointed out that the issue of the missing keys during the previous government had already caused distress among the people of Odisha. He remarked, “This person has given a misleading statement and has hurt many people in Odisha. He has no authority to do so. We have instructed the chief administrator to write a letter to DG ASI regarding this. The person involved in this should be punished for this indiscipline.”

Government’s Commitment to Transparency

Harichandan reassured the public that the state government is committed to handling the Ratna Bhandar issue with utmost care and transparency. He mentioned that the government is taking positive steps towards opening the Ratna Bhandar and will soon announce the modality and date for the event. “A proper inventory matching will be done, and the entire process will be published for the people of Odisha to see,” he added.

Conclusion

Minister Prithviraj Harichandan’s assertive stance underscores the Odisha government’s dedication to safeguarding the cultural and historical heritage of the Puri Lord Jagannath Temple. By ensuring that any actions related to the Ratna Bhandar are carried out with due process and respect for local sentiments, the government aims to maintain the sanctity and integrity of one of India’s most revered religious sites. The forthcoming steps will be watched closely by both the devotees and the general public, as the state navigates this delicate matter.
