An engineer employed by Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) in Bhubaneswar reportedly fell victim to a naked video call trap set by online scammers and lost Rs 25 lakh after being threatened.
The engineer received the first WhatsApp message from the catfish. Later, the con artist devised a naked video call scheme to capture him, according to sources, who also stated that the con artist began blackmailing the engineer while posing as a CBI officer.
The engineer paid the con man Rs 25 lakh out of fear of social shame.
“The individual who texted me on WhatsApp was someone I didn’t know. I received the message and then a WhatsApp video call. I quickly cut off the phone after discovering the individual to be nude when I received it. Later, the con artist altered the screenshot from the video call and began extorting money from me,” the victim claimed.
After the victim complained about it, the cyber police started an investigation into the situation.
According to cyber police, more than 30% of victims of cybercrimes fell for the scammers’ nude video call trap.
