Exemplifying decisive governance and people-first leadership, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Wednesday led the state’s coordinated response to the floods that have disrupted lives across Balasore, Bhadrak, and Jajpur districts, affecting nearly 30,000 residents.
Under his direct supervision, the Odisha Government evacuated over 5,000 people from low-lying and vulnerable areas, ensuring their relocation to safe shelters. The Chief Minister also announced that cooked food would be supplied to all affected families for the next seven days, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to compassion and rapid response.
Aerial Survey and Ground Assessment
Chief Minister Majhi, accompanied by Revenue & Disaster Management Minister Suresh Pujari and Higher Education Minister Suryabanshi Suraj, conducted an aerial survey to personally assess the situation. Following the survey, the Chief Minister provided a detailed update:
“While around 30,000 people have been affected, 5,869 have already been relocated to safe places. The situation is under control, and our focus remains on relief, rehabilitation, and disease prevention,” he said.
Majhi noted that water levels in the Subarnarekha and Jalaka rivers were receding, signalling a gradual improvement, though 81 villages across 8 blocks in three districts continue to face the aftermath of flooding.
Districts Affected and Immediate Relief
The affected areas include:
- Balasore District: Basta, Baliapal, Bhograi, Jaleswar
- Bhadrak District: Dhamnagar, Bhandaripokhari
- Jajpur District: Jajpur, Dasarathpur
The Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) confirmed that dry food packets and hot meals were being distributed by local administrations and relief teams. Special attention has been directed toward elderly, differently-abled, and women-headed households in the flood zones.
Focus on Health, Safety, and Disease Prevention
Demonstrating proactive governance, CM Majhi directed health and district officials to take preventive measures against waterborne diseases and snakebite incidents, which tend to rise during monsoon floods.
“We must ensure clean drinking water, sanitation, and adequate medical support in all shelters,” Majhi instructed during his review meeting.
Accordingly, district hospitals have been stocked with anti-venom, ORS packets, and essential medicines, and mobile medical teams have been dispatched to remote areas.
Disaster Response Strengthened Across Districts
To ensure zero casualties and seamless coordination, CM Majhi has deployed:
- 17 Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF) teams and 13 Fire Service units in Balasore,
- 1 NDRF team, 1 ODRAF unit, and 13 Fire Service teams in Bhadrak, and
- 1 ODRAF unit and 14 Fire Service teams in Jajpur.
These teams are engaged in rescue operations, debris clearance, and supply of essentials, while boat services have been intensified in inundated areas.
Rapid Damage Assessment and Rehabilitation Planning
CM Majhi directed all Collectors and BDOs to submit immediate damage assessment reports covering:
- Damage to homes, public infrastructure, and rural roads
- Livestock loss and agricultural impact
- Disruption to communication and electricity networks
“Reconstruction work and restoration of connectivity must begin without delay. Cattle feed, clean water, and medical supplies should be delivered on a war footing,” the Chief Minister directed.
The government has also ensured contingency funds for relief camps, ensuring uninterrupted food, healthcare, and sanitation facilities for displaced citizens.
